I’m not a religious person but I do seem to spend a lot of time visiting old cemeteries in Donegal. You don’t have to look far to find a cemetery with really old graves dating back as far as the 1500’s or even earlier.
Many old cemeteries will have graves marked with pieces of stone, mostly small slabs that are similar to standing stones. None of these stones will be marked, no names or dates, just plain flat stones. Although we’ll never know who is buried here, unless there are Church records which is unlikely, these were probably the final resting places for those who had no wealth and came from a poor background.
This row of unmarked headstones can be found at Fahan cemetery in Inishowen, a site dating back as far back as the 7th century.
